Part 1: New Single Image Work

20 min

The following sets of images represent new work created within the past three months. I'm looking for general feedback as to what works and what doesn't on both a technical and conceptual level.

Perhaps you want to scroll through this entire page first and get a feel for the amount of content. As usual I may be too ambitious, so feel free to be selective with this first part, since Part 2 has higher priority for me.

Illinois Marathon

This was my first time attending this event, which takes place every spring. I took the opportunity to capture some people shots and was also fortunate with the weather (fortunate for me, maybe not so much for the runners) to be able to get creative using water puddles and reflections. Since the race route went through Meadowbrook Park, I also made use of one of the works in the sculpture garden.

Watson Lake

While in Prescott AZ for Mother's Day weekend attending my sister-in-law's PhD graduation, I had time for a few photo sessions at this nearby attraction. The lake is one of two reservoirs at the Granite Dells, formed in the early 1900s when a dam was built on Granite Creek.

Florida Workshop

Florida was the location of my first ever photography workshop, an immersive experience that took place over 4 days. Each day consisted of sunrise and sunset shooting sessions, with afternoon instruction on post-processing in-between. With the majority of time spent on the beach, waves and water effects were the main attraction, but I also took time to look the opposite direction, as well as up close to capture small scenes.

Part 2: Mashups, Next Steps

40 min

Since our previous session was more focused on the new website format and less on actual content, I'd like to get additional feedback on current mashup work, and then further explore directions mentioned in the feedback from last time.

Mashups

Within each gallery below, please identify one or two works that stand out and why (click on the title link below each image).

A Higher Plane: High Altitude

This is an additional set of images recently added to the Higher Plane gallery. For me, the look is different but I like it, and the more pure, minimalistic approach of juxtapositioning planes and sky seems to better exemplify an enlightened, meditative state of mind. What do you think of these and how do they compare or fit in with the existing work in this gallery?

Next Steps

Feedback from the last session included exploring connections between analog and digital work, mashups using landscapes, or finding a way to more actively inject my visual aesthetic into the landscape work.

The mashup work has traditionally leaned more in an abstract direction utilizing more urban/man-made/architectural types of imagery. Not My Type perhaps embodies this approach the best of existing work. In that sense, I'm wondering how much to even continue traditional landscape work vs. focusing more purely on this direction. Anyway I've added some work below that includes possible directions with landscapes and additional bridging to analog work, and am interested in what additional thoughts all this may spark for you.

Dreamscapes

A couple of works from several years back when I was first exploring mashups.

Tilescape Alternatives

I also played around with combining source images from Tilescapes with traditional landscape images.

abStructs

Some earlier mashup work exploring linear/geometric abstraction.

Positive Space Mixes

Some initial mashup explorations using images from the sculpture garden.
